Despite a significant decrease in air traffic and passenger numbers during the COVID-19 pandemic, the upward trend that began in 2022 continued in the first 11 months of this year.
There was a notable increase in the number of passengers hosted at Istanbul and Sabiha Gökçen airports compared to 2022.
More than 70 million passengers used Istanbul Airport in the first 11 months
According to information on the General Directorate of State Airports Authority (DHMİ) website, Istanbul Airport hosted 70,396,167 passengers during the January-November period of this year.
Of these passengers, 16,926,712 were domestic, and 53,469,455 were international.
In the same period last year, it was calculated that Istanbul Airport served 14,831,436 passengers domestically and 44,284,331 passengers internationally.
In the first 11 months of 2022, Istanbul Airport saw a total of 59,115,767 passengers, indicating an increase of 11,280,400 passengers compared to the previous year.
The number of passengers increased by 19 percent compared to the same period last year.
A significant increase of more than 5 million passengers at Sabiha Gökçen
At Sabiha Gökçen Airport, during the January-November period of this year, 16,242,923 passengers flew domestically, and 17,676,767 passengers flew internationally. During this period, a total of 33,919,690 people arrived and departed from the airport.
Last year, a total of 28,041,128 passengers were hosted at this airport, with 14,022,861 on domestic flights and 14,018,267 on international flights in the first 11 months.
During the January-November period of this year, the number of passengers hosted at the airport showed an increase of 5,878,562 compared to the same period last year, reaching a total of 104,315,857 passengers, representing a 21% increase.
In the first 11 months of this year, Istanbul airports hosted 33,169,635 passengers on domestic flights and 71,146,222 on international flights.
The number of passengers flying from Istanbul airports, which was 87,156,895 in the same period last year, increased by approximately 20% to 104,315,857 passengers this year.
There was also an increase in the number of flights. In the January-November period of this year, Istanbul Airport had 117,784 domestic and 347,470 international flights, totaling 465,254 flights. This represents an increase of 76,806 flights, or about 20%, compared to the same period last year when a total of 388,448 flights were operated at the airport.
At Sabiha Gökçen Airport, a total of 207,688 flights were operated, with 98,211 on domestic routes and 109,477 on international routes in the first 11 months of this year.
Compared to the same period last year, there was an increase of 24,654 flights at Sabiha Gökçen Airport, where 183,034 flights were operated.
At Atatürk Airport, a total of 23,254 flights were operated, with 14,222 on domestic routes and 9,032 on international routes during this period.
In the same period last year, a total of 26,106 flights were operated at Atatürk Airport.
The statistics for the January-November months of this year showed a total of 696,196 flights from Istanbul airports, reflecting an increase of 98,608 flights, or approximately 17%, compared to the same period last year when 597,588 flights were operated.
