Entrances to Eminönü will now be subject to a fee

With the implementation of the plan, it is anticipated that the traffic congestion during "peak hours" in the city will be reduced by 10.1% by the year 2030. Additionally, in order to prevent traffic congestion, private car users will pay a fee for entering certain areas through the application of "Congestion Pricing." The pilot implementation of the system will be launched in the Historic Peninsula (Eminönü).

A FIRST IN TURKEY

The presentation of SKUP was attended by the European Union Ambassador to Turkey, Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, and the Director-General of EU and Foreign Relations at the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, Burak Aykan. İmamoğlu stated that the prepared plan is Turkey's first sustainable urban transportation plan. He noted that the plan includes measures to reduce car usage in central areas of the city, low-emission zones to decrease air pollution, improvements to the maritime transportation network, and the implementation of bus priority lanes.

With the realization of projects under the Transportation Plan, it is estimated that during "peak hours," the total number of cars per kilometer will decrease by 10.1% in 2030 and 12.8% in 2040.

One of the proposed projects aimed at making the city's transportation system environmentally friendly and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from transportation under the theme of transitioning to low carbon is the implementation of Low Emission Zones (LEZ). In this application, vehicles that do not comply with standards will either be unable to use the area or will be able to use it for a certain fee based on the principle of "the polluter pays." The first LEZ pilot project is planned for the Historic Peninsula (Eminönü), followed by implementation in Kadıköy (Moda).

Another application to be implemented to prevent traffic congestion is "Congestion Pricing." With this system, private car users will pay a fee for entering certain areas. The pilot implementation of the system will cover an approximately 6-square-kilometer area in the Historic Peninsula (Eminönü). Istanbul residents using paid parking lots in neighborhoods covered by SKUP will pay a lower fee when parking in their own neighborhoods.
