The charming guests of the Izmit Gulf

The İzmit Bay Wetland Area, one of the significant natural treasures of Kocaeli, has been enlivened in recent times by an increasing number of flamingos. As an important stopover for water and coastal bird species along their migration routes, the area holds special significance for the feeding and sheltering needs of migratory birds. Becoming a popular destination for flamingos, the protected wetland area offers a visual spectacle at sunset. İzmit Bay hosts 351 flamingos, turning it into a visual feast. Known for its ecological richness, the area is home to 168 bird species, making it a favorite destination for wildlife photographers and bird watchers alike.

In this context, the Tourism and Natural Life Areas Branch Directorate of Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality, the Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks Kocaeli Branch, along with Assistant Professor Dr. A. Cemal Özsemir from Samsun 19 Mayıs University, bird observer Ümit Malkoçoğlu, and nearly 40 observers conducted a Flamingo Counting and Bird Watching Event. During the event, which aimed to determine the population of waterbirds in the region and to protect their habitats, a total of 28 species, including Eurasian wigeons, Eurasian coots, sandpipers, and gray herons, were observed along with 351 flamingos. Bird observers meticulously worked in the field to determine the population of waterbirds in the region and to protect their habitats.
