The modernization works continue at Trabzon Airport, where two passenger bridges from Atatürk Airport have been brought. Due to the increasing tourist interest from Gulf countries in recent years, especially during the summer months, Trabzon Airport experiences significant congestion. The modernization efforts initiated at Trabzon Airport aim to address this issue. In 2023, the airport served a total of 3,499,592 passengers on domestic and international flights, with an 8% increase in domestic flights and an 18% increase in international flights compared to the previous year. As passenger and aircraft traffic continues to grow each year, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure has undertaken modernization works at Trabzon Airport. These include the construction of a new 3,077-square-meter international arrivals terminal and an 860-square-meter CIP passenger building. Additionally, a new 2,250-square-meter heating center building will be constructed. Other tasks under this modernization initiative include the revision of EDS and baggage handling systems, the revision of check-in conveyors, the addition of elevators, ceiling renovation, exterior facade renovation, and strengthening of floorings.
Two of the passenger bridges (jet bridges) from Atatürk Airport, which has been transformed into a People's Garden, have been transferred to Trabzon Airport. While the completion of the works is expected before the tourism season, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan recently announced during a speech in Trabzon that they will invest 20 billion to increase the capacity of the airport and put it into service.
Following the completion of the modernization works, feasibility studies will be conducted for a new runway measuring 3,240 meters in length and a new terminal building covering an area of 110,000 square meters with a capacity of 10 million passengers. Subsequently, the construction process of the new Trabzon Airport will be initiated.
