Warning for those with Russian citizenship

A new draft law is being presented to Russia's agenda. The bill, which is expected to come to the Duma agenda this week, will facilitate the cancellation of citizenship of foreigners who subsequently acquired Russian Federation citizenship but did not register for military service despite calls.

According to the draft, which was prepared with the initiative of the deputies of the Russian Communist Party, the citizenship of people who acquired Russian Federation citizenship not by birth but did not register for military service, or who fled from compulsory military service, or who did not join the army despite having received a summons in case of mobilization, can be revoked and deported from Russia.

According to the current laws, foreigners who acquire Russian citizenship and passport after taking an oath of allegiance to the country must go to the military branch of their residence within the next two weeks and register.

If the new law is passed, it will directly affect the situation of many foreigners who subsequently acquire Russian citizenship. Russian officials had previously made a statement that "Citizenship does not only give rights, but also carries responsibilities. These responsibilities, including military service, must be fulfilled."
