Residents of Derince village in Batman's Kozluk district have been doing the job they inherited from their grandfathers for 200 years. While the village of 45 households earns their living from this job, families earn approximately 150 thousand liras in 3 months. Village residents, who have been carrying out 'salt processing' for 200 years, carry the water that flows naturally under the ground with hoses for about 5 kilometers, collect it in pools and dry it in the sun. Villagers who transform water into crystal salt make their living in this way. THEY LEAVE THE WATER TO VAPOPOSE Stating that they turn salt water into salt by evaporation in the sun, Abdülkadir Sayın said that they accumulate natural water in the pool for a week and leave it to evaporate in front of the sun, and it turns into salt in front of the hot air. Stating that they earn their income in this way, Mr. Sayın said, "We work for 3 months and we make a living by selling the salt we obtain from here. A family with a worker can earn approximately 150 thousand liras in a season. Everyone living in our village makes a living from this salt. This salt does not spoil. It is a cure for many diseases. We take it with vehicles and sell it. All of them are sold immediately." THEY HAVE BEEN MAKING THEIR LIVES WITH THIS JOB FOR 200 YEARS Noting that they inherited the salt production from their grandfathers, the headman of Derince village, Cuma Yüksel, noted that they continue to sell the salt they obtain naturally during the summer months, also in the winter months. Stating that everyone was engaged in the salt business, Yüksel said, "First our grandfathers were producing salt, now we are doing this business. We have been doing this business for over 200 years. This salt is natural salt. This salt is used in cheese, pickles and many similar dishes. Trucks passing by take it from here to the western provinces. It is taken to Adana, Mersin, İzmir and other provinces. It is a very healthy salt. It does not contain any additives.
