Germany is tightening land border controls: Affect On Travellers

Germany's Interior Minister announced that new land border controls will be in effect for six months from 16 September. Germany announced that it has tightened controls at its land borders in order to control irregular migration and increase security. The knife attack in Solingen in August revived criticism of the coalition government on migration and deportations. In the face of growing public outcry, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz promised to toughen immigration laws. Here's what we know so far about how the new border controls will affect entry and exit from Germany by road. Why are the new German border controls being introduced? In August, three people were killed and eight injured in a knife attack at a festival in Solingen. The man who claimed responsibility for the attack and was taken into custody was a Syrian suspected of being a member of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). According to German media reports, the 26-year-old attacker's asylum application was rejected and he was supposed to be deported to Bulgaria, where he first entered the European Union (EU) last year, but he could not be deported because he disappeared. The Solingen attack took place in the run-up to the state elections in the two eastern regions of Saxony and Thuringia, where the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) has a very strong vote share. Just before the 1 September state elections, the coalition government announced new immigration measures to tighten the rules on deporting migrants. Europe's Schengen area allows passport-free travel between member states, but member states can introduce border controls if they consider there is a threat to public policy or internal security. When will the new controls come into force and how long will they last? Interior Minister Nancy Faeser announced at a press conference on Monday that the new border controls will come into force from Monday 16 September and will last for six months. What will change for travellers? Although details have not yet emerged, the new border controls are likely to affect everyone travelling into or out of Germany by land. If more people are stopped at the borders, there could be traffic jams for motorists. Bus and train journeys may take longer if transport is stopped for checks. Deutsch Bahn (DB), Germany's largest train operator, reported that in June this year almost half of the long-distance trains arrived late. It said this was due to extreme weather conditions. Long border controls could exacerbate the woes of DB travellers. Major train and bus operators such as Deutsche Bahn, European Sleeper and Flixbus were contacted for comment. Which countries will the new controls affect? Germany shares land borders with 9 countries. These are Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Poland, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Germany's border with Austria is currently subject to temporary controls, which were introduced in 2015 in response to a large influx of migrants and have been in place since then. These controls are in place until 11 November 2024. Temporary controls at the borders with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland were also introduced last year in response to renewed concerns about migration. These controls are in effect until 15 December 2024. The controls will also be extended to Germany's other land borders with France, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands and Denmark, the ministry said. The controls will initially be in place for six months. They will also cover the busy Christmas and New Year travel periods. Although Germany has so far announced that the controls will remain in place for six months, they may be extended if they are judged to have served their purpose.

UK and US passports are losing strength Haber

UK and US passports are losing strength

UK and US Passports Losing Strength According to the Passport Index, which is regularly published by Henley & Partners based on official data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), some noteworthy insights have emerged regarding the world's most powerful passports. The index reveals that the Singaporean passport, allowing visa-free travel to 195 countries, has once again secured the top spot as the world's most powerful passport. In the previous index, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Spain shared the lead with Singapore, but now these five countries have fallen to second place, with their passports allowing visa-free travel to 192 countries. Unprecedentedly, Austria, Finland, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, South Korea, and Sweden have jointly secured third place, offering visa-free travel to 191 countries. UK and US Passports Losing Strength Ten years ago, the United Kingdom and US passports were among the strongest in the world. However, they continue to decline in the rankings. According to the 2024 index, the number of countries that can be visited visa-free with a UK passport has dropped to 190. In the new index, the UK shares fourth place with Belgium, Denmark, New Zealand, Norway, and Switzerland. Meanwhile, the US passport, which allows visa-free travel to 186 countries, has fallen to eighth place, continuing its downward trend over the past decade. The Afghan passport, which permits visa-free travel to only 26 countries, remains at the bottom of the list. This marks the lowest score recorded in the 19-year history of the index. Henley & Partners Turkey Director Burak Demirel commented on the index, saying, "In 2006, the average number of countries that could be visited visa-free globally was 58. By 2024, this number has almost doubled to 111. However, the gap between the top and bottom of the list has never been wider. While the Singaporean passport at the top allows visa-free travel to 195 countries, the Afghan passport at the bottom allows travel to only 26 countries." Costs in Air Travel Decreasing According to IATA data, airports are expected to connect nearly 5 billion people through 22,000 routes and 39 million flights in 2024. Despite the aviation sector's revenue forecast of approximately $1 trillion this year, expenses are projected to reach a record $936 billion, resulting in a net profit of $30.5 billion. This equates to a net profit of just $6.14 per passenger, equivalent to the price of a single espresso in a typical hotel café. Nevertheless, the actual cost of air travel has decreased by 34% over the past decade. Risers, Fallers, and Election Impact in the Index The United Arab Emirates (UAE) passport has shown the most significant rise in the rankings, climbing 53 places from 62nd to 9th since the index was first published in 2006, now allowing visa-free travel to 185 destinations. Venezuela has experienced the steepest decline, falling from 25th to 42nd place over the past decade. The country is focused on the upcoming presidential elections on July 28, which could shape the fate of over 7 million Venezuelans who have been forced to leave their country. Additionally, the Henley Global Mobility 2024 Report highlights concerns in the US regarding the upcoming general elections, with fears that a potential new Trump administration might end the Temporary Protected Status program and initiate mass deportations. 30% of Schengen Visa Applications from Africa Rejected A new study within the published report indicates that passports from various African countries face the highest rejection rates for Schengen visa applications, with 30% of applications being denied. Globally, 10% of Schengen applications are rejected. Despite this, Africa has the lowest per capita rate of Schengen applications. The study also shows a direct correlation between the poverty level of the African country applying and the rejection rates. Turkish Passport Allows Visa-Free Travel to 118 Countries Turkey has climbed seven places in the index since January 2024, moving from 52nd to 45th place. This rise allows visa-free travel to 118 countries with a Turkish passport, marking Turkey's best performance in the index over the past decade.

Singapore and Japan, which have been at the top for five years, allowing visa-free access to 194 countries, are joined this year by France, Germany, Italy, and Spain. Citizens of these countries enjoy extensive travel freedom, being able to visit numerous countries worldwide. On the other hand, Finland, Sweden, and South Korea hold the second position on the list, while the United States has dropped to its lowest historical ranking, slipping to sixth place. With a U.S. passport, travelers can enter 189 countries visa-free. Another notable point in the index is that 23 out of the top 30 passports belong to European countries and the United Kingdom. Three passports come from Asia, two from North America, and one from Oceania. Turkey ranks 54th on the list by offering visa-free access to 118 countries. While the Henley & Partners Passport Index compares the strength of passports worldwide by measuring citizens' travel freedom, these data can also be interpreted as a reflection of diplomatic relations between countries and international travel policies.
