Governor Varol inspected the church under restoration

Adıyaman Governor Osman Varol visited the Adıyaman Mor Petrus and Mor Pavlus Church, which is part of the Syriac Ancient Metropolis, to inspect the restoration works following the damage caused by the earthquake. Accompanied by the Director of Adıyaman Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism, Abuzer Gelse, Governor Osman Varol examined the restoration efforts initiated for the Adıyaman and Surrounding Provinces Syriac Ancient Metropolis Mor Petrus and Mor Pavlus Church, which is among the registered cultural assets in Adıyaman and suffered damage due to the earthquakes on February 6th. After inspecting the restoration works at the church, Governor Varol received information from Metropolitan Melki Ürek about the historical significance of the church and the renovation efforts. Following his examination of the restoration works, Governor Osman Varol engaged in a conversation with the Syriac community. He emphasized that in the ancient city of Adıyaman, where tolerance prevails, Syriac citizens are seen as an integral part and richness of the city like a mosaic, and that they attach great importance to allowing all citizens, regardless of their origin, race, sect, or belief, to freely practice their own culture, religion, and traditions, drawing inspiration from our deep-rooted history and accumulated knowledge. Governor Varol also expressed his gratitude to Metropolitan Melki Ürek and the Syriac community for their hospitality.

Historic bridges are under protection

According to the statement made by the Ministry, historical bridges, which are maintained and repaired, are being renewed. The General Directorate of Highways, showing the necessary sensitivity to contribute to the development of conservation awareness, restores the historical bridges inherited from the ancestors and ensures that they are preserved in accordance with their original form. The maintenance, repair and restoration in accordance with the original of 2,474 registered historical bridges belonging to the Ottoman period, mostly in Bosnia and Herzegovina abroad, and 2,474 across Turkey, which are under the scope of the Law on the Protection of Cultural and Natural Assets and undertaken by the General Directorate of Highways, continue successfully. Restoration works of a total of 439 historical bridges have been completed within the scope of the Historical Bridges Branch Directorate. Renovation work continues on 82 historical bridges under the responsibility of the General Directorate of Highways.

Cizre awaits its visitors with its historical buildings

Cizre, where social life is revived with its historical, cultural values and natural beauties, has become a target in tourism. Historical structures such as the Prophet Noah's Tomb, İsmail Ebul-İz El-Cezeri Tomb, Mir Abdal Madrasa, Mem u Zin Tomb, Hamidiye Barracks and Mehmet Ağa Summer Palace attract attention in the district. Restoration work on the historical Ulu Mosque, famous for its figured door knockers, has been completed. Red Madrasa, one of the universities of the period, where Molla Ahmed Ciziri, one of the famous Islamic thinkers, taught, was opened to visitors after the restoration carried out by the General Directorate of Foundations. The restoration carried out by the General Directorate of Foundations in Cizre Castle (Birca Belek) is planned to be completed next month. Attempts are underway to make Cizre a route that is no longer visited, but a place to stay. "A great route is emerging for tourists to spend time here" District Governor and Deputy Mayor Nazlı Demir told Anadolu Agency (AA) that Cizre is an ancient settlement and has great potential with its historical and cultural background. The GAP Region Tourism Promotion and Branding Project is carried out in cooperation with the GAP Regional Development Administration and Dicle, Karacadağ and İpekyolu Development agencies. The project aims to bring the rich cultural heritage of Adıyaman, Batman, Diyarbakır, Gaziantep, Kilis, Mardin, Siirt, Şanlıurfa and Şırnak provinces to tourism and regional development. Water flows from the fountain in Kibyra 1300 years later

After the 1800-year-old Antonine Fountain, which was resurrected in the Ancient City of Sagalassos in 2010, the 2,000-year-old monumental fountain found in 2016 in Kibyra in Gölhisar district was brought together with spring water after approximately 9 months of restoration work by the Turkish excavation team. The restoration of the monumental fountain with two pools, 168 of which is original and 192 architectural blocks, located on the third terrace of the city, has been completed with the contributions of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Governorship of Burdur. Known as the "city of gladiators" in the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, the ancient city of Kibyra, which stands out with its odeon with medusa mosaics, stadium and huge theater, will increase its attraction even more with its fountain whose restoration has been completed and drinkable water flows. Both of the monumental fountains with water flowing from the fountain are in Burdur. Head of the Kibyra Ancient City Excavations Committee and Mehmet Akif Ersoy University Archeology Department Associate Professor Şükrü Özüdogru, told Anadolu Agency (AA) that the excavations in Kibyra started in 2006 and they unearthed the monumental structures of the city first. Pointing out that they completed the excavation of the round-planned monumental fountain in three seasons, and then they carried out a project with Turkish restoration teams to restore the fountain, Özü Doğru noted that they managed to get the spring water used in the ancient period, which they targeted, to flow from the fountain. Emphasizing that the monumental fountain in Kibyra has a unique plan, Özü Doğru said, "We now have two ancient cities in Turkey, where water is brought from the original source to the fountains that have been erected. One of them was restored and water was brought in the ancient city of Sagalassos in Ağlasun district, and Kibyra became the second example of this in our country. The fact that both of them are in Burdur is a plus in terms of tourism." The water of the spring used in ancient times flows from the mouth of the lion statues. Pointing out that a fountain was built in the middle of the agora after the great earthquake in 23 AD, Özü Doğru said: "We can say that the fountain consists of 3 main units. There is a tower rising in a round shape in the center, and there are 6 columns around this tower. Above the columns, it finds a conical roof decorated with reliefs. There are also two pools around this center. It has been in service for about 150 years after the first earthquake. There are 6 lion and panther statues in the center where the water comes from. We found two of these statues during excavations. The originals of the sculptures are exhibited in the Burdur Archeology Museum. For the restoration project, a sculpture shaving friend made imitations of these. Water flows into the pool from these statues. A second pool was added at the end of the second century AD. The second pool was actually very magnificent in the original, and there must have been 12 normal human-sized bronze statues on it. Unfortunately, we have not come across these statues in our excavations until now. Maybe we can reach these sculptures in the future.” Noting that up to 700 fountains were used after Christ, Ozudogru said, "It is a fountain that has been used for about 700 years. Based on its last use, it regained its former function after 1300 years." Stating that Kibyra is a cosmopolitan city where four different languages are spoken, Özüdogru stated that agriculture, animal husbandry, medicine, iron and ceramics work are common in the city, and that it has a strong economy and a strong army consisting of 30 thousand infantry and 2,000 horse cavalry.

Karakuş Tumulus damaged in earthquakes opened to visitors

The 2,000-year-old handshaking stele and column in the Karakuş Tumulus in the Kahta district were damaged in the earthquakes. While the overturned column was lifted, the broken handshake stele was repaired. Adıyaman Museum Director Mehmet Alkan told reporters that after the restoration work was completed, the tumulus was opened to visitors. Alkan stated that with the start of the tourism season, there is a high visitor density; "After 15 days of restoration work, we restored the column, which was built 2 thousand 43 years ago and collapsed in earthquakes. The tourism season has opened in Adıyaman. We invite everyone to travel to this unique history." Esher Karal, who came to visit the region from Şırnak, said, "Our history was also affected by the earthquakes, but what is pleasing here is that history was restored after the restoration works. We liked it very much." One of the visitors, Gizem Sakalar, expressed that she liked the Karakuş Tumulus very much and that she was happy to see the final stages of the restoration work in place.

Artifacts damaged in the earthquake are being restored

27 foundation works, including mosques, churches and tombs, which were destroyed and damaged in earthquakes in Hatay and Osmaniye, are being rebuilt. Foundations General Manager Sinan Aksu told Anadolu Agency (AA) that many foundation cultural properties were damaged after the earthquakes in Kahramanmaraş on February 6 and in Defne district of Hatay on February 20. Restoration of 24 foundation works in Hatay and 3 in Osmaniye Aksu stated that after the earthquakes, they quickly started work on the site by performing damage assessments. Tender processes related to this have been carried out and site deliveries have begun. Noting that the Hatay Regional Directorate of Foundations, whose building was heavily damaged and demolished in the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes, continues its activities in the prefabricated building in the same place, Aksu noted that its work continues in the provinces affected by the earthquake.

Restoration works of the Karakuş Tumulus have started

Historical places in Gaziantep have been restored

In addition to the houses and workplaces damaged in the earthquakes, historical places such as museums, inns, Turkish baths, traditional houses, mosques, fountains, and castels, which are frequently visited by visitors in the city, were also damaged. Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality Conservation, Implementation and Inspection Bureau teams have started work to restore the damaged historical places in their original form. The restoration of the buildings, whose projects were completed in the company of architects, was completed within 2 months and opened to visitors. Serdar Murat Gürsel, Head of the Department of Conservation, Implementation and Control of Gaziantep Metropolitan Municipality, told Anadolu Agency that most of the historical sites in the city were damaged. Stating that they completed the works in a short time and started the restoration, Gürsel said, "Historical buildings in Gaziantep, including traditional residences, inns, baths, mosques, castels, fountains and Gaziantep Castle, were damaged. Selimiye Mosque is aimed to be opened for worship this year

Work continues in Selimiye, whose restoration was started in November 2021 by the General Directorate of Foundations. The teams carry out the operations inside and outside of the mosque in accordance with the original. Restoration work continues on the main dome, minarets, courtyard, fountain, tiles and garden. A part of the mosque has been used as a place of worship since the beginning of the restoration.
