Interest of Russian tourists in Samsun

The Astoria Grande cruise ship, which carries 1,491 people, has docked at Samsun Port. Since the beginning of cruise tourism, the Astoria Grande has made significant contributions to the regional economy. After a one-week break, the cruise ship has returned to Samsun. Departing from Sochi, Russia, and having visited Izmir, Istanbul, Bartın, and Sinop, the ship, with 1,047 tourists out of the 1,491 passengers, will allow its guests to spend time in Samsun and Amasya. Tourists staying in Samsun will visit the Bandırma Ship Museum, Samsun Museum, Cumhuriyet Square, Amazon Village, shopping malls, beaches, and Vezirköprü. Those heading to Amasya will tour the Amasya Museum, Çakallar Hill, and the city itself. In the evening, the ship will depart from Samsun and head towards Trabzon.

Russians on Vacation: How Much Did Turkey Benefit

In the summer of 2024, there has been a significant increase in Russian travel abroad. According to RBC, which based its report on data from mobile operators, the number of Russian trips abroad between June and August increased by approximately the same percentage compared to the previous year. The report notes that most of these trips were to countries like Turkey, Abkhazia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Georgia, with notable increases in visits to Asia as well. Turkey remained the most popular destination during the summer. According to MTS Travel data, visits to Turkey increased, making up 27% of all international trips. MegaFon data shows a similar trend, with 22% of Russian tourists choosing Turkey. Meanwhile, China emerged as the second most popular distant destination for Russian tourists this year. Russian interest in Asia extends beyond China. Significant increases were observed in trips to countries like Vietnam, Japan, Thailand, and Cambodia. MegaFon reports that trips to Vietnam increased by 2.7 times, and trips to Japan grew by 64%. MTS Travel reports a 3.7 times increase in trips to Vietnam. Travel to European countries from Russia has seen a more modest rise. According to MTS Travel, trips to Europe increased by 3% compared to the previous year, with Germany, Italy, France, Spain, and Greece being the most popular European destinations. MegaFon reports a 5% increase in European travel, with Romania, Switzerland, and Estonia showing the most significant growth.

Russian tourists continue to flock to Amasra

Bartın's Amasra district, known for its stunning natural beauty and sea, has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Black Sea region. Since the introduction of cruise passenger transportation in August 2022, a total of 59,278 passengers have visited the area over two years. Russian tourists, who explore the district's historical and tourist sites, also enjoy the natural beauty of the sea. The Astoria Grande cruise ship, which has docked at Amasra Port 50 times, continues to bring more tourists to the region with each passing day. This morning, the ship brought 1,058 passengers and 453 crew members to the district. So far in 2024, 17 trips have brought a total of 23,007 visitors. With 9 more trips planned for this year, the 51st voyage next week is expected to bring the total number of visitors to over 60,000. By the end of 2025, after the 80th trip, the number of tourists is expected to exceed 70,000. The ship will visit the district 4 times in September, 3 times in October, and 2 times in November before taking a break in December. It will resume trips in January of the new year. After another break in February 2025, the ship will continue passenger transport in March for the first time. Amasra Mayor Recai Çakır highlighted the increasing interest from Russian tourists, saying, "The Russian guests arriving on the Astoria Grande cruise ship during the Black Sea tours have taken a great liking to our district. Today, 1,058 passengers and 453 crew members are with us. We have 9 more trips planned for this year. With the next trip, we will surpass 60,000 visitors. With 30 trips planned for next year, Amasra continues to make its mark on cruise tourism."

Russians have no enthusiasm for learning Turkish

"Among those with an income of 100,000 rubles or more, English (36%) stands out as the most popular language, while Chinese (20%) ranks second. Spanish received 9%, Arabic 4%, Italian 3%, and both German and French got 1% of the votes. Participants in this income group stated that they do not want to learn a foreign language. Additionally, 5% of the survey respondents said they would like to learn one of the following languages: Korean, Turkish, Portuguese, Czech, Sanskrit, or others. Overall, regardless of income level, English (38%) was the most popular language among all participants, followed by Chinese (second place). German and Japanese shared third place with 5% each. Those interested in learning Italian and French were 4%, while those interested in learning Spanish were 3%, and Arabic 1%. Participants who do not want to learn a foreign language explained that they do not travel abroad. Since the start of the military operation in Ukraine, there has been a significant increase in the demand for language learning. Hebrew saw a 206% increase, Georgian 88%, Serbian 74%, and Chinese 69%. Bulgarian experienced a 70% increase in demand, Turkish 55%, and Armenian 29%. Following Western sanctions, the demand for specialists who know the Chinese language also increased. According to a study by HeadHunter, the demand for specialists with knowledge of the Chinese language rose to one and a half times the pre-pandemic level in 2022, and in the first quarter of 2023, it increased by 40% compared to the same period in the previous year."

Turkey accounts for 55% of organized tours, while Egypt and the United Arab Emirates are preferred by 8% of tourists. Domestic tourism expenditures have increased by 40.5%, reaching 118,500 rubles. Among Southeast Asian countries, Thailand is the most preferred destination. Reservations to Thailand have increased by 2.3 times compared to last year. This rise is attributed to Thailand's availability of direct flights and its affordability compared to other popular holiday destinations. Expectations are that this growth will continue in the coming years.

Turkish and Russian tourists are looking for alternatives

The Russian Tourism Industry Union (RST) also pointed out that the local population in Turkey, struggling with high costs, prefers Greece for their holidays. RST Vice President Dmitriy Gorin stated, “Turkish tourists often choose neighboring countries for their vacations. This is not the case for Russian tourists.” Noting that inflation in Turkey has risen to 80%, Gorin said, “For the local population, vacationing in neighboring countries is more affordable.” The Russian tourism official also mentioned an increase in the number of tourists coming from Turkey to Russia, and it is expected that the number of Russian tourists visiting Turkey will rise from 6.5 million last year to 7 million this year.

ATOR has announced the most preferred destinations by Russian tourists in August and the holiday costs in these destinations. The Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR) compared the average holiday prices in different destinations for the beginning of August in Russia. According to ATOR data, 62% of the tours sold for early August are to Turkey. This rate was 56% in the second half of July and 65% in June. According to a report on TürkRus, Egypt ranks second with 17%, and Russian beaches rank third with 13%. The cheapest destination for a 10-day tour package for two people from Moscow is Anapa, at 78,600 rubles. This price includes accommodation in a 3-star hotel with breakfast and transportation by car from Moscow. The minimum food and drink expenses for a 10-day holiday in Anapa are stated to be around 30,000 rubles. The lowest tour price for 10 days in Sochi is 96,000 rubles, and 99,400 rubles in Abkhazia. In the United Arab Emirates, the lowest tour package for two people in a 2-star hotel with breakfast for early August is 118,200 rubles. In Egypt, this figure is 149,000 rubles for a 3-star all-inclusive hotel. The cheapest tours are to Vietnam and Thailand (130,000 and 132,000 rubles). In Antalya, the price of a 10-day all-inclusive tour package for two people in a 3-star hotel is around 170,000 rubles.

For Russian tourists, Egypt has become one of the most attractive options for beach vacations this winter by offering a week-long holiday opportunity equivalent to the price of an airplane ticket. According to data from the Association of Tour Operators of Russia (ATOR), it is possible to enjoy a pleasant holiday for a week in Egypt by spending 40,000 to 60,000 rubles per person. Representatives of ATOR stated that a one-week, all-inclusive vacation for a family of four in a five-star hotel in the United Arab Emirates costs around 400,000 rubles. However, they noted that prices have dropped to as low as 250,000 rubles in Egypt for this winter season. It was emphasized that prices have decreased by approximately 30 percent, especially in holiday resorts along the Red Sea coast. Izvestiya newspaper reported that European tourists are staying away from the Gaza Strip area of Israel due to ongoing operations, which has led hotels to offer discounts on their prices. However, industry representatives do not expect a significant surge in Egyptian tours from Russia. They pointed out that the number of flights between the two countries is not sufficient to accommodate a potential influx of tourists. Nevertheless, Egypt, with its affordable prices and attractive holiday opportunities, is becoming increasingly popular among Russian tourists, and this trend is expected to further increase in the coming periods.

Tourists enjoying the sun in Alanya rushed to the sea

While cold and rainy weather affects various parts of Turkey, in Alanya, where summer-like days continue, Russian tourists did not leave the sea. The sunny weather, which has been effective in the district since the beginning of the week, continued to manifest itself today. With the temperature rising up to 20 degrees Celsius in the afternoon, foreign tourists headed to the world-famous Cleopatra Beach. Taking advantage of the sunny weather, locals unfolded their camping chairs by the sea, enjoying the sunlight. Some tourists chose to fish by the sea, bringing their fishing gear with them. On this day reminiscent of summer, people strolling along the beach were seen, while tourists from the city of Moscow, Russia, enjoyed the pleasure of swimming in the sea. Karina Nazarova (23), who mentioned that the current temperature in Russia is minus 20 degrees, said, "We went from minus 20 degrees to plus 20 degrees. There is snow there, and here we have the sun. I am very happy with this situation." Another Russian citizen, Nikita Vendin (29), stated, "We cannot see the sea surface in our country. We arrived here just yesterday, and today we are swimming in the sea. We quickly adapted to the warmth. We love Alanya very much." At OCCO Beach on Cleopatra Beach, operator Yavuz İlkhan said, 'It's January. As you can see, there is a strong interest from tourists in Alanya. People are swimming in the sea right now. This is the beautiful sand of our paradise, Alanya. We welcome everyone here. They can swim in the sea in January. Currently, there are tourists, predominantly from Ukraine, Russia, Germany, the UK, and Scandinavian countries. Hopefully, tourism looks promising for the 2024 season.
