Scientific research: Famous tourism city will be submerged

Scientists in Italy have stated that the system of flood barriers will not be sufficient to protect Venice from sinking and rising sea levels, predicting that the city will be submerged by the year 2150. According to Euronews, a new study conducted by scientists in Italy has revealed that parts of the country's lagoon city, Venice, will be underwater by 2150. The research was carried out by experts from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), analyzing data on rising tide levels. Venice, one of the world's most touristic cities, has been struggling with increasingly frequent flooding for decades. Currently, there is a flood barrier system in the 550 square kilometer shallow bay in the Northern Adriatic Sea surrounding Venice and its islands. However, scientists believe that these barriers will not be sufficient to continuously protect the canal city from sinking and rising sea levels. A group of scientists from INGV found that the tide level in the Venice lagoon is rising by about half a centimeter per year. Scientists estimate that some parts of Venice's most famous square, St. Mark's Square, will be 70 centimeters underwater. The city's western side will also be one of the first affected areas. This region, which experienced flooding 58 times between 2019 and 2023, is one of the most frequently flooded areas. Marco Anzidei, an INGV researcher, said, "The rise in sea level, especially if accelerated by local subsidence, leads to increasingly severe and widespread coastal erosion, shoreline retreat, and marine flooding with very significant environmental and socio-economic impacts for communities."

Holiday Rush in Hatay, Home to Turkey's Longest Coastline Haber

Holiday Rush in Hatay, Home to Turkey's Longest Coastline

In Hatay's Samandağ district, which fell into silence following last year's devastating earthquake, a similar level of pre-earthquake holiday rush was observed due to the nine-day holiday and hot weather at the 14-kilometer-long beach. The Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes had caused significant destruction in Hatay's Samandağ district, leading to a quiet holiday season last year. However, as the wounds from the earthquake began to heal and residents returned to their homes, there was a surge of activity on Samandağ beach, Turkey's longest coastline, during the Eid al-Adha holiday. With temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, people sought relief in the cool waters of the Mediterranean. The crowd at the public beach was also captured from the air by drone footage. Hatay Metropolitan Municipality's Fire Department lifeguards remained on high alert for any drowning incidents. "The Only Way to Cool Off in Hot Weather is to Swim in the Sea" Ahmet Kimyeci, who mentioned spending the holiday at the beach, said, "We came to our house by the beach for the holiday. We're spending the holiday here. The weather is hot, but the sea is normal. It can be better or worse than this. The only way to cool off in hot weather is to swim in the sea. We came with our grandchildren. The beach is nice but needs some maintenance. It's crowded now, but it will get even more crowded in a few hours. You can swim until 8 PM. We have a pleasant sea. With the weather being so hot, this is the only way to cool off. We're spending the holiday like this." "I Come Twice a Month to Escape This Heat" Nevzat Açık, who described Samandağ beach as one of the largest in the world, said, "The weather is very hot, so we threw ourselves into the sea. The weather is very hot, so everyone came to the sea. The beach is crowded. Since it's a holiday, everyone has come for vacation. I come twice a month to escape this heat," he said.

Enjoying the sea in Antalya in december Haber

Enjoying the sea in Antalya in december

While the harsh winter affects many regions of Turkey, the tourist city of Antalya continues to experience summer-like days. In the city where the temperature is 19 degrees and the sea water temperature is measured at 21 degrees, the world-famous Konyaaltı Beach has become the destination for those enjoying the sunny weather. After a rainy day yesterday, where the temperature was 19 degrees and the sea water temperature was 20 degrees, those who witnessed the sunny weather in the tourist city of Antalya headed to the internationally renowned Konyaaltı Beach. It was observed that the majority of those entering the sea in the Konyaaltı district, where many expatriates reside, were tourists. Tourists enjoyed the sea with their children, and some individuals had fun moments on canoes, while many others spent their time reading books. The crowded scene along the coastline resembled the summer months. On the other hand, for tourists who want to spend New Year's Eve in hotels, the entertainment spot was the pools. Families, along with their children, slid down water slides, enjoying the sunny weather. "I Owe My Health to the Mediterranean" Ismet Gültekin (72), who came to Konyaaltı Beach and entered the sea, stated, "The sea water temperature is not below 20 degrees, and I feel the air is around 22 degrees. I always come here to swim in the winter, and it feels great. I owe my health to the Mediterranean. I would recommend it to friends who come; saltwater feels like medicine. Many people don't come because they think the water is cold, but it's not cold. I can't resist coming before I do. Ten minutes are enough for me, and once I get in, I don't feel like getting out. It's also nice to swim in rainy weather."
