Record increase in the number of 'staying at a friend's house'

Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK) announced household domestic tourism statistics for the second quarter of 2023. According to the data announced by TÜİK, 13 million 639 thousand people traveled domestically in the second quarter of 2023, while an annual increase of 142.5 percent was recorded in tourism expenditures. The second place among travel purposes was "travel, entertainment, holiday" with 27.7 percent, and the third place was "health" with 3.3 percent. Those who traveled in this quarter mostly stayed at a "friend's or relative's house" with 70 million 880 thousand overnight stays. According to accommodation types, "own house" ranked second with 12 million 872 thousand overnight stays, while "hotel" ranked third with 8 million 5 thousand overnight stays. In the third quarter, consisting of April, May and August, 13 million 639 thousand people residing in the country went on a trip. The total number of trips made within the country, with one or more overnight stays, increased by 41 percent compared to the same quarter of the previous year, reaching 16 million 84 thousand trips. Travelers spent 100 million 108 thousand nights in this quarter. The average number of overnight stays was 6.2 nights. Travel expenses of domestic tourists in the country will increase in the second half of 2023. In the quarter, it increased by 142.5 percent compared to the same quarter of the previous year and reached 47 billion 792 million 417 thousand TL. 90.6 percent of these expenditures were personal expenses with 43 billion 311 million 528 thousand TL, and 9.4 percent were package tour expenses with 4 billion 480 million 889 thousand TL. The average expenditure per trip was 2 thousand 971 TL. The largest share was allocated to food and beverage When the distribution rates of expenditure types in total travel expenditures in this quarter are examined, the highest share was taken by food and beverage expenditures with 32.9 percent, transportation expenditures with 26.4 percent and accommodation expenditures with 14.4 percent. When the change rates of these types of expenditures compared to the same period of the previous year were examined, an increase of 197.3 percent in food and beverage expenditures, 73.4 percent in transportation expenditures and 235.1 percent in accommodation expenditures was observed.
