Van Museum showcases unique historical works

The museum, which was built on an area of 50 thousand square meters with a closed area of 13 thousand square meters in the north of Van Castle, contains important artifacts from the past of the provinces of the region as well as Van.

Taking visitors on a historical journey with its animation sections on the lifestyles and wars of civilizations as well as historical artifacts, the Van Museum is one of the museums in the world where the most artifacts from the Urartian period are exhibited.

The museum, designed with a contemporary museology approach and exhibiting 2,800 of nearly 45 thousand historical artifacts, attracts attention with its corridors arranged in chronological order.

"We have 45 thousand works that we can put on display"

Provincial Culture and Tourism Director Erol Uslu told Anadolu Agency (AA) that museums play an important role in transferring world heritage artifacts from the past to the future.

Stating that the Van Museum building, whose foundations were laid in the Republican period and included in the scope of the directorate in 1972, was damaged in the earthquakes of 7.2 and 5.6 that occurred in 2011, Uslu explained that a new building was built opposite the Van Castle.

Stating that a modern museum was brought to Van, Uslu said, "Our building, which was built within the scope of contemporary museology, consists of 23 halls. It opened its doors to visitors in 2019. It stands out with its works from the Urartian period recorded in its inventory. We can say that it is the only museum in the world that contains the Urartian collection. It takes visitors on a historical journey from the past to the present by emphasizing the understanding of quality and contemporary museology."

Stating that the historical memory of Van can be seen as a whole in the museum, Uslu said:

"The museum has a very rich collection. We have 45 thousand works to display. However, we exhibit 2,800 works. We shed light on that period with animations. Instead of exhibiting works that are the same, we include unique works that attract people's attention. As in many museums, free services are provided to citizens within the scope of Museum Week in our archaeological sites such as Van Museum, Akdamar Island and Van Castle. In 2023, our museums and ruins hosted approximately 60 thousand visitors. The season has just opened. I hope 2023 will be a good tourism year for Van."

"We see many works together"

Özden Başak, who came from Istanbul, said, "This is the first time I come to this museum. It has been really taken care of. I visited many museums in Turkey, but I found this place very impressive. It is very enjoyable. We see many works together. The fact that all the findings of the Urartian civilization are here adds a different beauty. Even someone who has no knowledge can access healthy information here."

Visitor Tuğçe İyigün said, "There are many museums to visit in our country, but this place is really beautiful. It is a very special museum brought to Van. The animations and other works are magnificent. We recommend everyone to see this place."
