Healing Mesir paste will be scattered again after 3 years

The International Mesir Festival, which is on the UNESCO's 'Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity' list and has a deep-rooted tradition in Turkey, could not be held for 3 years due to Covid-19. After a 3-year hiatus, it has been announced that the International Mesir Festival, which has a deep-rooted history, will be held in 2023.

A cooperation protocol was signed at the Manisa Governor's Office for the 483rd International Mesir Festival, which will be held in April 2023. The cooperation protocol held under the chairmanship of Manisa Governor Yaşar Karadeniz, MHP's Manisa Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Cengiz Ergün, AKP's Mayor of Princes Ömer Faruk Çelik, Manisa Mesir Promotion and Tourism Association President Ufuk Tanık, Manisa Culture and Tourism Provincial Director İbrahim Sudak joined.

“OUR PREPARATIONS STARTED”

Making a statement before the cooperation protocol, Ufuk Tanık, President of Manisa Mesir Promotion and Tourism Association, stated that they are happy to realize the Mesir Festival after 3 years, and that they have already started preparations for the festival to be held in April 2023.

The head of the association, Witness, made the following statements in his statement: “When Covid-19 started, we could not hold the Mesir Festival for 3 years. For our Mesir Festival, which we will hold for the 483rd time next year, we will hold our magnificent festival between 26-30 April, after we have held our representative mixed ceremony on March 21. Our preparations have begun. As an association, we continue to produce Mesir Paste within the framework of the possibilities we have. We will hold our Mesir Festival, which both our city and Turkey miss.”

Association President Witness also stated that 7 tons of healing Mesir Paste will be scattered from the domes of the historical Sultan Mosque at the scattering ceremony to be held on April 30 as part of the festival.

“IT WAS ONE OF THE PRODUCTS THAT WILL RECEIVE THE EU GEOGRAPHICAL MARK”

In his statement, the head of the association, Witness, finally stated that traditional Mesir Paste is among the products that will receive the European Union Geographical Indication, and concluded his words as follows: “We had a meeting with the Turkish Patent Institute 15 days ago. In 2018, we received the Geographical indication registration for our Manisa and Mesir Paste. This year, 10 product applications will be made from Turkey for the European Union Geographical Indication Registration. Traditional Mesir Paste is included in these 10 products. This is of great importance for both our city and our Mesir Paste. Now, the Mesir Paste tradition will show that it is completely registered all over the world, except for one commodity. With this registration, it will make great contributions to the promotion of our Mesir Paste abroad. It's a process. However, it is very important for us that our Mesir Paste is included in this evaluation. This is a 2-3 year process. We will follow this process. We hope that we will have the European Union registration of Mesir Paste.”

“MESIR IS NOT ONE OF THE ARTIFICIAL FESTIVALS”

In his speech, Manisa Governor Yaşar Karadeniz pointed out that the International Mesir Festival is one of the deep-rooted traditions in Turkey, and said: “I am excited to experience the Mesir Festival for the first time. Because during the pandemic period, we spent 2 festival years without having this festival. The number of traditional activities that have been going on for centuries in our country does not exceed the fingers of one hand. One of them is the Mesir Festival. Our Mesir Festival is not one of the artificial festivals. It is the ancient event and festival of a city with an ancient culture. When we look at its history, Mesir Paste is a product that is synonymous with Manisa's title of the City of Princes and is almost the symbol of it. Within the framework of the festival, on the one hand, a deep-rooted tradition was kept alive, on the other hand, the protection of the brand value was ensured. We will continue this tradition, which has been kept alive for centuries, in a very good way and enthusiastically to our people next year.”

After the speeches, a cooperation protocol was signed for the 483rd International Mesir Festival, which will be held in April 2023 under the chairmanship of the Governor Karadeniz, and work was started.
